How much does SAR training cost?
Nothing*. We provide free SAR training for humans and their dogs. We only train SAR skills for dogs though, not basic obedience. Handlers are expected to do obedience training in their own
* Note: We do have annual membership fees of $5 for apprentices and $10 for ready searchers. Membership is not a requirement though.
Do you only accept German Shepherds?
Nope, we accept pointy, blunt and floppy eared dogs of all kinds.
Where are you based?
Pierce County in Washington State
What do you search for?
Lost persons, deceased subjects, and the occasional evidence
Where do your workouts occur?
Normally within an hour of Pierce County. 1-2 hours of Seattle.
Where do your searches occur?
Generally Pierce, Thurston, Mason and Kitsap Counties. But we help out in other counties as needed. As of July, we have participated in missions across 8 different counties for 2017.
Do I need to live in Pierce County to join?
No, roughly 30% of our members are in the Greater Seattle Area.
What type of Car do I need?
Anything with high clearance that can handle rough terrain and snow will work. 4 wheel drive is not necessary, but AWD is good to have. We frequently hold workouts on old forest roads and in backcountry terrain, and searchers can be in a wide variety of areas.
You should also be comfortable with the idea backing up on uphill/downhill terrain along heavily forested single car roads.
Most SUVs, Trucks, Subarus, and Jeeps are adequate. As examples, our searchers have Jeeps, Subarus (wagons + suvs), trucks, Highlanders, 4Runners, and FJ Cruisers.
What is the time commitment like?
We have two workouts a month that will probably take one whole Saturday (12-16hr) each after you factor in travel time. There are numerous missions a month for Active Searchers, but Active Searchers are not required to attend all missions.
We average one mission every 5.44 days.
See the Workout Calendar for dates/times.
How often do you go on missions?
We generally participate in over 60 missions per a year.
As of July, we have gone on 35 missions in 2017, and a total of 67 missions from July 2016 - July 2017. That averages to one mission every 5.44 days.
